Celebrating Failure

I have had a rough time finding an internship for this summer because I have failed to impress the interviewers. This has happened a few times this semester and it has definitely been pretty discouraging, because you finally get to the point where you get an interview and then you don't get the internship. Failing makes me feel discouraged and upset, and mostly makes me feel less intelligent compared to other people applying for the same position. I generally consider myself a pretty qualified applicant, so getting denied is definitely a reality check. This class has helped me realize that a lot of people fail and it's a necessary step on the path to success, so it makes the failures a little more bearable!

  1. Laura, as I can read, I believe you are being to hard on yourself. If I may, I will get personal with this post given that I myself was in a very similar situation about 18 months ago. Before landing the amazing opportunity I have landed (Citi NY, with an amazing group/package/office) I went through a similar struggle. Although I had a very impressive resume -words of interviewers other than mine- that was a lot more still to do. All by myself I applied to 24 companies, 52 positions in 7 different cities including Hong Kong, Vienna, Bern, and Madrid. What I learned from this painful and time consuming experience, is that internships and interviews are nothing more than a numbers game. The more you apply the better you get at interviewing. The more you search around the more you learn and the more doors you knock on the more they will open. Do not feel discouraged, use this as fuel and motivation for landing you desired internship. Best of look. You can take a look at my blog here: http://ent3003cesaralfonzo.blogspot.com

  2. Laura,

I have experienced similar struggles especially within the corporate world. Internships are extremely competitive regardless of your qualifications. What I try to remember is that eventually as long as you continue to press forward you will achieve your goals. Everything is about perspective. I wish you the best of luck in your searches. If you get a chance here is the link to my post.
